Pat Barker’s renowned “Regeneration” trilogy (1991/1993/1995) uses World War One trauma and shell-shock as its key theme, borrowing true-life characters (Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, famed war poets, for example) in order to explore attitudes towards hysteria in men and differing treatment methods, such as the then-recent use of talking therapy.  “Liza’s England” is a gorgeous text exploring aging and vulnerability.
